Pueraria Mirifica Then and Now

Pueraria Mirifica grows in primarily in Thailand, although it also grows in the under developed countries of Burma and Laos. Much of the Pueraria Mirifica entering the supplement and cosmetic industry is derived from wild pueraria mirifica. It is very difficult to determine the quality of each plant. Each plant has a different genetic profile, soil conditions, its own environmental milieu and age at harvest. To further complicate things wild pueraria mirifica is harvested in remote areas. The actives can be quite volatile. A typical rule of thumb has been that a pueraria mirifica root should be desiccated and processed within 3 days. This may not always be the case.

Over the last 50 years there was no way to measure the chromenes in pueraria mirifica. The major problem is that both miroestrol and deoyxmiroestrol are very difficult and fractionate and even much more difficult to synthesize. Without the availability of these

two compounds there is no way to accurately measure these compounds in the plant. Thai academic chemists have advised me they just don't have the budgets. Recently with the availability of some small amounts of chromenes in several academic settings their have been legitimate testing results for chromenes. The results demonstrated that deoxymiroestrol and miroestrol indeed co-existed in the roots. In one study using commercial supplements, in the highest quality samples deoxymiroestrol contributed the

highest estrogenic contribution although miroestrol was dominant in quantity. In another

study done on roots harvested in the wild by academics bought immediately back to the laboratory for preparation went as follows: deoxymiroestrol was far dominant in quantity vs. miroestrol. Of course deoxymiroestrol is far dominant in activity. This suggests at least for now that companies using wild pueraria mirifica because of crude or delayed processing techniques are delivering compromised pueraria mirifica and hence compromised products. Deoxymiroestrol is quite volatile and readily oxidizes to miroestrol. Further studies will be needed for to notion to be confirmed.

The most sophisticated pueraria mirifica operations in Thailand farm Pueraria mirifica. The pueraria mirifica that has been selected for farming is cultivar strains studied by leading Thai scientists over periods of many years. Superior genetics, nutrient enrichment, organic farming, cultivation makes for higher actives, especially higher chromenes. It is critically important that onsite processing and desiccation equipment is used to process the pueraria mirifica. This ensures no degradation of active especially the very volatile deoxymiroestrol, the active with the most activity.

American Phyto Lab is a major manufacturer and supplier of farmed premium pueraria mirifica cultivar in the form of PueraraPrem tm. Siriporn Cosmeceutical based in the United Stated is currently using PueraraPrem in there products.
